Box Score GREENWOOD – The Lander women's basketball team scored two baskets in the final seven seconds including Bre Crum's game-winner off a turnover to stun Lincoln Memorial 58-56 in the season opener for both teams at the PBC/SAC Challenge in Horne Arena.
The Lady Bearcats shook off a miserable shooting performance which found them converting only 16 of their first 58 shots (28 percent) before rallying.
For the first time, women's basketball is playing four 10-minute quarters rather than two 20-minute halves.
Participating schools in this weeken's tournament from the Peach Belt Conference are Lander and USC Aiken, while Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial are representing the South Atlantic Conference.
Carson-Newman outlasted USC Aiken 67-63 in Friday's opener. Aiken meets Lincoln Memorial Saturday at 1 followed by Lander versus Carson-Newman at approximately 3.
Lincoln Memorial's Britney Guy made one of two free throws with 14.5 seconds left to give the visitors a 56-54 lead. The Railsplitters had led by as many as 15 points in the second half.
But Lander's Breshay Johnson tied it with a layup off a Crum assist with seven seconds left. Then Lincoln Memorial threw away the inbounds pass, giving the Lady Bearcats another quick possession.
Lander did not fail as Victoria Baldwin found Crum open for a short jumper in the lane and the senior hit the game-winner with two seconds to go. Lincoln Memorial's desperation shot from beyond half-court fell short.
Crum led the Lady Bearcats in four categories with 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five important steals.
Ty'hesha Reynolds and Breshay Johnson added 11 points apiece for Lander while Jada Wallace shared team-high honors with eight rebounds. Baldwin added nine points.
The Lady Bearcats made 24 of 76 shots from the floor (32 percent), only six of 17 free throws (35 percent) and four of 19 from 3-point range (21 percent). Lander was out-rebounded 52-39.
Guy led Lincoln Memorial with 11 points, while Shea Coker added nine points and four assists. Josey Harding had a game-high 16 rebounds, Megan Pittman added 13 rebounds, and Jasmine Kelly had three blocked shots for the Railsplitters.
Lincoln Memorial made 24 of 57 shots (42 percent), four of seven free throws (57 percent) and four of 12 from behind the arc (33 percent).
Harding's basket gave Lincoln Memorial a 47-35 lead in the first minute of the fourth quarter. But Lander's press began to turn the game around with Crum and Mylea McKenith each getting back-court steals and baskets to pull the hosts within eight.
Crum found Baldwin open at the top of the key for a 3-pointer that pulled the Lady Bearcats within five, 47-42, with 8:26 left in the game to complete a 7-0 run.
After Kiara Rawls made two free throws for the Railsplitters, Johnson hit a layup and Crum scored on a fast-break off a Reynolds steal to pull Lander within 49-46 with 7:48 left.
Baldwin's 3-pointer tied the game at 53-all with 2:36 to go.
Kelly's jumper put Lincoln Memorial back on top, 55-53, a few seconds later. Johnson made one of two free throws to close Lander back within a point with 1:10 to go.
The Lady Bearcats committed a turnover when they had a chance to take the lead just inside the minute mark, and had another opportunity but missed a reverse layup with 23 seconds to go. But when they were given a couple more chances, they took advantage for the dramatic win.
Lander closed the first quarter strong with Wallace making a basket and Crum adding a steal and layup for a 12-9 lead.
But Lincoln Memorial outscored the Lady Bearcats 19-8 in the second quarter for a 28-20 halftime lead. Guy scored eight points, including a pair of 3s, to pace the Railsplitters in the second period.
Baldwin's 3 pulled Lander within 31-23 with 8:29 left in the third quarter. But Coker's jumper pushed Lincoln Memorial's lead back to 37-25 with 6:05 to go in the third.
Wallace's fast-break basket off a Crum steal pulled the Lady Bearcats within 39-31 with 1:49 left in the third.
Harding's basket in the paint matched Lincoln Memorial's largest lead of the game at 13 points, 45-32, with 33 seconds left in the third. But Reynolds converted a three-point play as Lander trailed 45-35 going into the fourth.
