Baseball gets school-record 39th win in victory over Lions

FLORENCE, Ala. – The No. 3-ranked Lander baseball team rallied for two runs in the ninth inning Saturday afternoon to come from behind to defeat the University of North Alabama, 4-3, at Mike Lane Field and win its school-record 39th game.

Lander, which held North Alabama to three hits, improves to 39-6 overall, besting the single-season record of 38 wins set by the 2012 team. North Alabama drops to 21-25.

Thomas Bess' RBI single plated Chris Hyatt to tie the game at 3-all, then Tyler Wilson scored the game winner on Patrick Grady's RBI fielder's choice.

The Bearcats' Brandon White (3-2) earned the victory on the mound, striking out five and walking one in 1.2 innings of relief. Starter Mason McCullough struck out 12 and walked four, while allowing one earned run on two hits in seven innings.

North Alabama's Jacob Westerhouse (1-2) took the loss with one walk and two earned runs on five hits in two innings.

The Lions struck first for a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Tyler Hall scored on Jake Smith's sacrifice bunt.

The Lions stretched their advantage to 2-0 in the seventh after Matthew Tittle doubled in Smith.

Lander tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth when Aaron Poole went home on Grady's groundout, and Connor Lewis singled in Bess.

North Alabama went back on top at 3-2 in the bottom of the inning on Dylan Boston's RBI single.

Lewis went 3-for-5 for the Bearcats.
