Late Inning Heroics Lead to Doubleheader Sweep of St. Leo

ST. LEO, Fla. - A 10th-inning RBI double in game one and a go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning of game two lifted the Lander baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of the St. Leo Lions on Friday at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.

With the two wins, Lander reaches the 30-win mark for the third straight season, a feat accomplished only two other times in program history (2004-06, 2012-14). The victories also extend the Bearcats' season-best win streak to eight and their series-winning streak to five.

Game 1: Lander 10, St. Leo 8 (10 inn.)

Jake Monroe and St. Leo starter Parker Hohnstock each allowed a run in the third inning, with Lander scoring on an RBI single from Ryan Hansen and the Lions answering with a solo homer. Both starters settled in from there, with Monroe ultimately tossing a season-high eight innings while allowing three runs.

Lander broke through late, taking the lead in the seventh on a Hansen sacrifice fly before adding five runs in the eighth behind RBI hits from Kyle Murphy, Cooper Backman, and Caden Crews to build a 7-1 advantage.

The Lions answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, and Backman added what proved to be a crucial insurance run with an RBI single in the ninth to make it 8-3.

St. Leo stormed back in the bottom of the ninth, taking advantage of a Lander error to score five runs, four of them unearned, to tie the game at eight and force extra innings.

In the 10th, Zach Cowart delivered an RBI double to give Lander a 9-8 lead and later came around to score on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 10-8.

Joshua Sanchez retired the side in order in the bottom half, striking out two to earn his third win of the season.

Game 2: Lander 5, St. Leo 4 (7 inn.)

St. Leo jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, but Jake Larson settled in and allowed just one more run over six innings while striking out three.

Lander got on the board in the fourth with a solo homer from Oliver Zohn. In the fifth, a wild pitch brought home a run before Zohn tied the game with an RBI double. Brody Winter followed with a run-scoring double to give the Bearcats a 4-3 lead.

The Lions answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, sending the game to the seventh tied at four.

With two outs in the final frame, Zohn singled and advanced to third on a double by Winter. He then came home on a wild pitch to give Lander a 5-4 lead.

Nolan Alexander closed it out in the bottom half, working around a one-out hit before inducing a game-ending double play to secure his first career save.

Lander concludes the regular season tomorrow with the series finale against the Lions set for noon. The Bearcats will then await the results of the final Peach Belt Conference series to determine their seeding for the upcoming PBC Tournament.
