Lander baseball cruises past No. 2 West Chester, 14-1

GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team pounded out 13 hits Friday night and earned one of the biggest wins in program history when it defeated No. 2 ranked and defending national champion West Chester (Pa.) University, 14-1, in a non-conference game at Dolny Stadium.

Lander improves to 3-1 overall, while West Chester, which was held to three hits, is 0-1. The two teams will continue its series with a 3 p.m. single game on Saturday and a noon start on Sunday.

Dylan Wolchick (1-0) earned the victory on the mound after striking out five, walking three and allowing one earned run on three hits in 6.2 innings of work.

The Rams' Joe Gunkel (0-1) suffered the loss, striking out four, walking three and allowing five earned runs on six hits in four innings pitched.

Lander jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Graham Ramos stroked a solo home run over the left field fence, then, with bases loaded, Colby Painter's left field single drove in Erik Lunde.

The Bearcats stretched their advantage to 4-0 in the second after Ramos, who reached on a walk, scored on Patrick Grady's fielder's, choice coupled with a West Chester throwing error, and Lunde scored on Connor Lewis' fielder's choice.

West Chester cut the lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning on Jordan Wlodarczyk's solo homer down the left field line.

With bases loaded in fourth, the Bearcats made it 6-1 after Ramos scored on Lewis' bloop single into left center and Lunde went home on Weston Lawing's fielder's choice.

The Bearcats scored two more times in the fifth. With bases loaded, Austin Dunn went home when Grady was hit by a pitch and Aaron Poole scored on Grady's walk.

Keyed by Grady's two-run homer, Lander added five runs in the sixth inning for a 13-1 lead. Pinch runner Ryan McNulty scored on Poole's RBI single to left field, Dunn went home on a wild pitch and Poole advanced on Ramos' sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Jeff May scored the Bearcats' final run in the seventh when he led off with a left field double, advanced on a balk and scored on Dunn's groundout.

For Lander, Ramos batted (3-4) had one homer, one double, three runs scored and two RBI; Grady (2-3) had one homer, one run and three RBI; Lunde (2-4) had one double and four runs scored; and Lawing (1-5) doubled and had one RBI.
