WILSON, N.C. - Bryan Newton shot a three-under-par 68 Monday to pace the No. 9-ranked Lander men's golf team to the first-round lead in the 20-team, three-round, NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional Tournament hosted by Barton College at the par-71, 6,839-yard Wilson Country Club. Newton, a senior from Laurens, S.C. who is tied for second place, carded seven birdies to go along with four bogeys as he shot par-36 on the front nine and a 3-under 32 on the back nine.
Senior Charlie Hoyle is tied for fourth at 2-under 69, Davis Lee is tied for 12th at 71, Roberto Nasalli-Rocca is tied for 59th at 74, and Chad Siefert is tied for 97th at 78.
Lander scored a team low 2-under-par 282 and is followed by: 2. Barry 283, 3. Nova Southeastern 285, 4. St. Leo 288, 5. Lynn 289, 6. Valdosta State and Queens 291, 8. The South/Southeast Super Regional is the strongest region in the country with eight of the top 10 ranked teams nationally. Among the ranked teams are: No. 1 Barry, No. 2 Georgia College, No. 3 Florida Southern, No. 4 North Alabama, No. 7 Lynn, No. 8 Belmont Abbey, No. 9 Lander and No. 10 Nova Southeastern. Other top 25 teams include No. 12 West Florida, No. 15 Barton, and No. 17 Valdosta State.
The top five teams in the regional will advance to the NCAA national championship tournament May 18-21 in Noblesville, Ind.
