TOCCOA, Ga. – The No. 6 Lander men's golf team finished eighth out of 16 teams at the Anderson/Erskine Currahee Invitational contested at Currahee Club on Monday and Tuesday.
The Bearcats were +17 and within seven strokes of fifth-place and 12th-ranked Lincoln Memorial. Eckerd (+14) was directly in front of Lander with co-host Anderson (RV) sixth at +11.
No. 9 Wingate won the tournament at -21 ahead of No. 13 USCA (+2). Lenoir-Rhyne (RV) was third at +6, followed by co-host Erskine (+7).
Filip Yngfalk and
Noah Curdt put together consistent performances for Lander and tied for 16th at +1. Yngfalk went 73-69-75 on the par-72 course. He had five birdies during that low-scoring second round and 12 total for the week.
Curdt had a pair of 72s before closing with a 73 in the final round this afternoon. He had nine birdies during the tournament.
Freshman
Garrett Gillespie made his first appearance in the Bearcats' starting lineup and tied for 31st at +5. He had rounds of 72-73-76 while sinking 10 birdies over those rounds.
Capping the scoring for Lander was
Cathal Penney (+10) in a tie for 44th. The junior Irishman put together his best round of the tournament, a 71, in the final round. Penney had 10 birdies in all.
Lander returns to the course next week for West Florida's Copperhead Championship on Oct. 13 and 14. It will be played at Innisbrook Resort on the Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor.
