MCCORMICK, S.C. – Lander Men's Golf began the 2026-27 season hosting the Savannah Lakes Men's Invitational at Monticello Golf Club, finishing sixth out of 18 teams.
Cathal Penney, playing as an individual, finished T2 and made the All-Tournament Team in a 108-player field after posting rounds of 67/72/69. Penney was fourth in par-5 scoring and sixth in par-4 scoring. He sank the seventh most birdies (13) to go along with 36 pars.
USCA won the team championship at -34 ahead of Wingate and North Georgia's 17-under tie. Georgia College was one stroke behind that pair and a stroke ahead of Erskine in fifth.
The Bearcats had the second lowest score during the opening round when they posted a nine-under 279. A key contributor to that was
Cody Brenner, who shot 67 in that round and finished at five-under for the week. Brenner made 12 birdies and 35 pars overall while tying for 15th.
Brady Duval was two-under and T25 after bookending the tournament with a pair of 70s.
One shot behind him was
Aaron Lin, whose scorecards read 73/68/74. That middle round 68 was the second lowest score this week for the Bearcats.
Leo Degerlund (+2, T40) opened the tournament with the best round of his young career, a 70.
LU heads to Dahlonega, Ga., and the Achasta Golf Club next week for the UNG Mizuno Intercollegiate on Sept. 21-22. The Bearcats are the defending champions.
