McKever leads No. 15 Lady Bearcats past North Georgia

GREENWOOD – Shannon McKever collected her sixth double-double of the season and three other players scored in double figures Saturday afternoon to lead the No. 15 Lander women’s basketball team to an 80-65 Peach Belt Conference victory over North Georgia College & State University in Horne Arena.

Lander improves to 14-1 overall and remains unbeaten in PBC play at 7-0, while North Georgia drops to 5-7, 1-3.

McKever connected on 5-of-12 field goals and 7-of-10 free throws and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Bearcats. Brittni Johnson added 12 points, six steals and four assists, Ciara Lyons had 11 points and three assists, and Brianna Webb 10 points.

North Georgia was led by Whitney Randolph’s game-high 24 points and seven rebounds, while Meredith Montgomery and Sarah Stinson netted 12 points and eight rebounds each. Tiffany Marlow grabbed nine rebounds. Montgomery also dished off five assists.

After a back-and-forth opening half which saw eight lead changes in the first eight minutes of the game, Lander broke a 14-14 tie and went on a 9-0 run to take a 23-14 lead on Johnson's jumper with 9:35 left. North Georgia whittled the lead down to 27-24 with 4:27 left on Ali Cline's field goal, but the Bearcats ended the half with a 13-2 run and a 40-26 halftime lead.

Lander grabbed its biggest lead of the game at 19 points with 17:39 when a pair of McKever free throws made it 47-28.

North Georgia rallied to cut the lead to 69-62 with 5:26 left on Montgomery's jumper, but Lander went on a 7-0 run to take a 76-62 lead with 3:30 left on Johnson's layup.

Lander, which hosts Armstrong Atlantic State in a PBC contest at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, connected on 29-of-68 field goals (42.6 percent), including 9-of-19 three pointers (47.4 percent). The Lady Bearcats made 13-of-20 free throws (65 percent).

The Lady Saints were 27-of-64 from the field (42.2 percent), including 1-of-7 three pointers. NGC&SU made 10-of-13 free throws (76.9 percent).
