DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The Lander women's basketball team overcame a 17-point, second-half deficit Wednesday night to defeat North Georgia College & State University, 73-69, in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
With one regular-season game remaining, the Lady Bearcats improve to 17-9 overall and 12-7 in the PBC, while North Georgia falls to 8-19, 5-15.
Nardia Robbins and Shannon McKever scored 18 and 17 points respectively for Lander, while Ciara Lyons and Jasmine Judge added 11 points each. McKever led the team in rebounds with seven, while Robbins added five steals.
North Georgia's Syretha Marble scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Lady Saints, while Whitney Randolph added 14 points and Sarah Stinson had eight points and 12 rebounds.
Lander, which trailed 38-21 at halftime after shooting just 34.8 percent from the field, bounced back in the second half when they hit 55.9 percent of their shots. For the game, Lander connected on 27-of-57 shots for 47.4 percent, including 3-of-9 three pointers for 33.3 percent. Lander also made 16-of-23 free throws for 69.6 percent.
North Georgia connected on 25-of-49 points for 51 percent, including 4-of-11 three pointers for 36.4 percent. The Lady Saints were 15-of-16 from the foul line for 93.8 percent.
After two Keondra free throws and a McKever layup cut North Georgia's lead to 52-41 with 9:34 left in the game, the Lady Bearcats made their move.
Lander tied the game at 63-63 on a Jasmine Judge three pointer with 3:36 left, then the Lady Bearcats took their first lead of the game at 65-63 on a pair of McKever free throws with 2:51 remaining. Lander stretched its lead to six points at 73-67 on a Lyons layup with 19 seconds left for their biggest lead.
The Lady Bearcats travel to Savannah, Ga. this Saturday for it's regular-season finale at Armstrong Atlantic.
