Lander men’s soccer shuts out Flying Fleet, 3-0

GREENWOOD - The Lander men's soccer team tuned up for its showdown with Clayton State on Saturday, defeating the Erskine Flying Fleet 3-0 in a non-conference game Wednesday night.

The Bearcats improved to 9-5-1 on the season while Erskine fell to 5-10-2.

Lander's regular-season finale is a Peach Belt Conference match against Clayton on Saturday afternoon in Greenwood.

The Bearcats would win the Peach Belt regular season title if they beat Clayton Saturday and Flagler loses to Francis Marion. Currently, Flagler is 6-1 in the PBC, the Bearcats and Clayton are 5-1-1, and Francis Marion is 4-1-2. The regular season champ will have the No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament.

So Lander tuned up for Saturday's match by playing rival Erskine on a very muddy field after Tuesday's heavy rains.

The Bearcats had 10 shots to only one for Erskine before finally scoring when Samy Beydoun nailed a direct kick into the left side of the net with 2:21 left in the first half. It was Beydoun's third goal of the season.

Lander increased its lead to 2-0 with 32:11 left in the second half when Adam Arthur nailed a penalty kick after being tackled in the box. It was Arthur's team-high 12th goal of the season.

Although the Bearcats had a large shot advantage in the game, Erskine did have two big scoring opportunities after Arthur's goal. Lander defender Jamie Ramm broke up one breakaway chance, and Bearcats goalkeeper Matthew Atkinson made a brilliant save on Tyrell Dyson's breakaway.

Lander scored its final goal with only one second left when Aaron Brittain nailed his 11th goal of the season off an assist from the right side by Ivan Stoykov.

The Bearcats out-shot Erskine 23-5 and had an 11-2 edge in corner kicks. Fleet goalkeeper Devon Braykovich had 11 saves while Atkinson stopped four shots.
