Lady Bearcats upset No. 17 Clayton State, 85-84

MORROW, Ga. -- Brianna Webb fired in the game-winning three-point shot with 5.6 seconds left Saturday afternoon to lead the Lander women's basketball team to an 85-84 upset victory over No. 17-ranked Clayton State in a Peach Belt Conference game.

Lander improves to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the PBC, while the Lady Lakers, who were dealt their first PBC loss of the season, fall to 11-2, 5-1.

Shannon McKever posted a double-double for the Lady Bearcats with 19 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 8-of-12 from the field. Webb added 17 points, seven assists and five rebounds, while TaSheba Butler had 16 points and Ciara Lyons 13.

Clayton State was paced by Marie St. Fort and Lisa Jackson, who both scored a game-high 21 points, while Dominique Jennings added 15. Jackson and Shanrika Hardeman grabbed eight and nine rebounds respectively.

Lander, which trailed, 43-42 at halftime, connected on 33-of-65 field goals for 50.8 percent, including 7-of-21 three pointers for 33.3 percent. The Lady Bearcats also made 12-of-15 free throws for 80 percent.

Clayton State made 30-of-74 floor shots for 40.5 percent, including 3-of-8 three pointers for 30 percent. Clayton State also made 18-of-24 foul shots for 75 percent.

The game was tied seven times in the first half and Clayton State posted the largest lead at 33-28 at 4:44 on a Jackson layup.
Lander took a 46-45 lead with 18:33 remaining in the game on a Butler field goal and she stretched the margin to 48-45 on another field goal at 17:53. Clayton tied the game at 48-48 at 17:40 on a St. Fort three-pointer.

Clayton led by six at 72-66 with 5:17 left on a St. Fort field goal and free throw after being fouled by McKever.

Butler led the final Lander rally with two free throws at 1:39 that cut the Lady Laker lead to 79-78, while a McKever field goal with 49 seconds left cut the margin to 81-80 and Jasmine Judge's layup with 17 seconds left cut the home team's lead to 83-82.

After being fouled by Butler, Clayton's Jennings was only able to connect on one of two free throws with 14 seconds left to give the Lakers an 84-82 lead.
