AIKEN, S.C. - Although LaShonda Chiles took just 5 minutes, 12 seconds to score the needed points to break the NCAA Division II scoring record Thursday night against USC Aiken in the second round of the Peach Belt Conference tournament, it took every second of the 40 minutes for Lander to defeat the Lady Pacers, 68-67, in the Convocation Center.
Lander, which improves to 20-11 overall, will face top-seeded Francis Marion in the semifinals at 4 p.m., Saturday. USC Aiken falls to 20-8.
Entering the game, Chiles needed just four points to tie the record of 2,810 points set by Minnesota-Duluth's Dina Kangas (1988-91). Her first three-pointer at 17:52 tied the game at 5-5 and her second three -- the record breaker -- gave Lander a 11-6 lead at 14:58.
Chiles, an All-PBC player, finished the game with 14 points, while two-time PBC Player of the Year Tiara Good scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed six rebounds. Stephanie Ponds added a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
USCA was led by Meredith Legg, who scored 19 points. Avonte Williams and Morgan Johnson added 15 points each and Jordon Thomas led the Lady Pacers with 10 rebounds.
Lander, which led 40-27 at halftime, dominated the first 20 minutes of play and led by as many as 18 points on three occasions.
But the Lady Pacers slowly chipped away at the Lander lead in the second half, cutting the 13-point halftime lead to 44-36 on a Legg three pointer with 15:27 left. Lander built the lead back up to 16 points at 56-40 with 12:30 left. USCA outscored Lander 20-12 in the final 10 minutes.
Lander connected on 26-of-59 field goals for 44.1 percent, including 7-of-17 three pointers fro 41.2 percent. The Lady Bearcats, who also outrebounded USCA 46-33, made 9-of-13 free throws for 69.2 percent.
USCA was 24-of-68 from the field for 35.3 percent, including 9-of-25 three pointers for 36 percent. USCA made 10-of-12 foul shots for 83.3 percent.
