LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.----The Indiana University – PA women's basketball team overcame a 12-point deficit with 6:30 left in the game Saturday afternoon to defeat Lander, 94-91, in the 2007 Disney's Division II Women's Tip Off Classic basketball tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla.
Jahzinga Tracey recorded 18 of her game-high 31 points in the second half to lead five IUP (2-0) players in double figures. Tracey made 14-of-27 shots from the floor, including 8-of-14 in the second half. Her 27 field goal attempts is a new tournament record. Kylie Miller added 17 points (13 in second half) shooting 5-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Kierstin Filla scored 14 points and dished out nine assists. Lacey Claar and Hillary Shope came off the bench to contribute with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Lander's Tiara Good scored 20 of her 28 points in the second half to lead the Bearcats (1-1). Good shot 8-of-13 from the floor (6-7 FG in second half) and 10-11 from the free throw line. LaShonda Chiles recorded 22 points (13 in the first half) shooting 9-of-15 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc. Andrea Butler added 13 (6-9 FG) points and eight rebounds.
Trailing 15-10 at the 13:29 mark in the first half, Lander went on a 19-8 run to take a six-point lead (29-26) with 6:46 left in the half. The Crimson Hawks scored six of the next seven points, four by Lacey Claar, to dwindle the lead to one. The Bearcats extended the lead back 11 with a minute left before Jahzinga Butler recorded a three-point play to end the half, reducing the Crimson Hawks deficit to eight (46-38) going into intermission.
IUP came out smoking hot as they went on a 15-4 run to start the second half and take 53-50 lead at the 16:23 mark. After a Kianna Smith jumper, Lander regained the lead three minutes later and extended it to 12 (83-71) with 6:28 left in the game. The Crimson Hawks scored 14 of the next 16 points to tie the score at 85-85 two and half minutes later. With the score tied at 87-87, IUP outscored Lander 7-4 over the last 2:30 of the game to secure the victory.
The difference in the game was transition points as IUP scored 26 points off 23 Lander turnovers compared to eight by Lander (14 turnovers). The Crimson Hawks also recorded 19 fast break points as Lander scored just five.
Lander will face Assumption College (1-1) of Worchester, Mass. at noon Sunday.
