GREENEVILLE, Tenn.----The Lander volleyball team picked up two more wins Friday during the first day of the Tusculum College Pioneer Classic when the Bearcats defeated Johnson C. Smith University, 3-0 (30-8, 30-13, 30-8), and Fayetteville State, 3-0 (30-14, 30-16, 30-18). The Classic resumes on Saturday.
Lander improves to 11-1 overall, which is the Bearcats best start in the nine-year history of the program. The team has already surpassed last year's total number of victories (10).
Against Johnson C. Smith, Lander was led by Kay Stewart (10 kills, four blocks), Melissa Trippany (nine digs, five service aces), Jennifer (JJ) Edwards (16 assists ) and Sara Senn (five service aces).
Against Fayetteville State, the Bearcats were led by Kerri Sorensen (10 kills), Senn (eight digs), Edwards (37 assists), Stewart (two blocks) and Marina Camps (four service aces).
On Saturday, Lander will play St. Andrews at 11 a.m. and Tusculum at 2 p.m.
