Lander Dominates Paine for First Sweep of Season

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Lander volleyball team closed out the VSU Fall Tournament in dominant fashion Saturday, rolling past Paine College in straight sets inside The Complex.

The Bearcats (3-6) controlled the match from start to finish, taking the three sets 25-12, 25-5 and 25-10 to earn their first sweep of the season. The victory provided a strong response for Lander after dropping a pair of matches to host Valdosta State and Rollins on Friday.

Lander turned in its most efficient offensive performance of the season, recording 41 kills with just eight attack errors on 76 attempts for a .434 hitting percentage. The Bearcats also held Paine (0-5) to 10 kills and a -.132 hitting percentage.

Karson Browning led the way with 10 kills and did not commit an attack error on 16 attempts, finishing with a .625 hitting percentage. The junior also added two blocks and finished with a match-high 11.5 points.

Ryleigh Willard and freshman Gracelyn America each added six kills. America hit .667 on nine attempts, while Willard finished at .364 and added three service aces and two blocks. Tyra Listenbee contributed four kills on six attempts for a .667 clip, while Krista Lauck put down three kills on four swings.

The Bearcats set the tone immediately, hitting .360 with 12 kills in the opening frame while holding Paine to a -.107 clip to take the set 25-12.

Lander was even more dominant in the second. The Bearcats committed just one attack error and put down 14 kills on 21 attempts for a .619 hitting percentage. On the other side of the net, Lander's defense limited Paine to three kills and forced nine attack errors as the Bearcats cruised to a 25-5 victory.

The Blue and Gold never let up in the third, recording a match-high 15 kills while hitting .367. Paine managed just two kills in the frame as Lander closed out the sweep with a 25-10 victory.

Madeline Green and Emma Greenier split the setting duties, finishing with 18 and 14 assists, respectively. Sam Alwardt led the defensive effort with eight digs while adding three service aces, and Quinn Butler collected seven digs.

The Bearcats were also able to utilize their entire roster in the victory, with every member of the Lander squad seeing action in the three-set sweep.

Lander held advantages in every major team category, including kills (41-10), assists (37-9), service aces (10-2), blocks (5-2) and digs (47-22). The Bearcats held Paine to negative hitting percentages in all three sets while hitting above .360 in each frame.

The win capped the VSU Fall Tournament on a high note for Lander, which bounced back from two tough losses on Friday, including a five-set battle against Rollins, to earn its third victory of the season.

Lander returns home Friday, Sept. 18, to open Peach Belt Conference play against Georgia College at Finis Horne Arena. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
