Lander Falls to Georgia College in PBC Road Match

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Lander volleyball team fell in straight sets to Georgia College on Friday evening at the Centennial Center, as the Bobcats evened the season series at one match apiece.

The Bearcats (7-14, 4-6 PBC), who previously defeated Georgia College in five sets on Sept. 18, dropped Friday's Peach Belt Conference contest by set scores of 25-12, 25-23 and 25-19. The Bobcats improved to 9-18 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

Quinn Butler led Lander offensively with eight kills and a team-high 13 digs, while Karson Browning followed with seven kills, two blocks, and a service ace. Freshman Gracelyn America added six kills, while Madeline Green finished with 21 assists, eight digs, and three kills.

Defensively, Sam Alwardt contributed nine digs, while Amelia May and Olivia Shaw each recorded three blocks.

Georgia College opened the first set with eight consecutive points before Lander got on the board with a kill from America. The Bearcats attempted to cut into the deficit behind kills from Browning and May, but the Bobcats maintained their advantage to take the opening set 25-12.

Lander responded with a strong start in the second set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead behind three early kills from Butler and a kill from Browning. The Bearcats maintained their advantage through the middle of the frame before Georgia College battled back to even the score at 15-15.

A kill from America and a block from May and Green helped Lander regain an 18-16 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Browning later extended the lead to 21-17, but the Bobcats answered with four consecutive points to tie the set at 21-21. The teams traded points before Georgia College secured the final two points to take the set 25-23.

The Bearcats responded to their second-set loss with a strong start to the third, building an early 9-3 advantage behind kills from Butler and Ryleigh Willard, along with service aces from Browning and Sarah VanDaele. However, Georgia College answered with seven consecutive points to take a 10-9 lead.

Lander continued to battle, pulling within one at 17-16 following a Scherer service ace and a Bobcats setting error. However, Georgia College extended its advantage down the stretch to secure the 25-19 victory and complete the sweep.

The Bearcats finished with 30 kills, three service aces, six blocks and 43 digs. Georgia College recorded 41 kills on a .246 hitting percentage.

Lander will conclude its two-match road series against Georgia College on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 3 p.m. inside the Centennial Center.
