Browning's Career Night Leads Lander Past Georgia College in Five

GREENWOOD - Junior Karson Browning recorded a career-high 19 kills as Lander opened Peach Belt Conference play with a five-set victory over Georgia College on Friday night inside Finis Horne Arena.

The Bearcats (4-6, 1-0 PBC) battled back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 in the match to defeat the Bobcats (3-12, 0-1 PBC) 19-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-14, 15-12.

Browning led the Bearcats with 19 kills and added three blocks for a match-high 20.5 points. Quinn Butler recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and a match-high 21 digs, while Ryleigh Willard finished with 12 kills on a .269 hitting percentage.

Freshman setter Madeline Green also turned in a career night, recording her first career double-double with 42 assists and career highs in both digs (20) and blocks (four). Sam Alwardt added 18 digs, six assists, and two service aces.

Georgia College took the opening set 25-19 after holding Lander to a .022 hitting percentage, but the Bearcats quickly responded in the second. Lander hit .280 while limiting the Bobcats to a .077 clip to even the match with a 25-16 win.

The third set went down to the wire before Georgia College pulled out a 25-23 victory to take a 2-1 match lead.

Facing a must-win fourth set, Lander responded with its most decisive frame of the night. The Bearcats recorded 16 kills while holding Georgia College to just six and a negative-.023 hitting percentage. Lander pulled away for a 25-14 win to send the match to a decisive fifth set.

The Bearcats pulled away midway through the fifth set, turning a 4-4 tie into a 7-4 advantage. Lander continued to build on the lead, with a Scherer service ace making it 10-5 and putting the Bearcats in control of the deciding set.

The Bobcats fought off two match points before an attack error closed out the 15-12 set and gave Lander the conference-opening victory.

The Bearcats finished with advantages in kills (59-50), assists (54-49), service aces (7-3) and digs (83-68). Lander hit .353 in the decisive fifth set and held Georgia College to a .145 hitting percentage for the match.

The victory was Lander's second straight after the Bearcats closed the VSU Fall Tournament with their first sweep of the season against Paine.

Lander remains at home Saturday as the Bearcats host Middle Georgia at 3 p.m. inside Finis Horne Arena.
