Lander Falls to Augusta on Senior Night

GREENWOOD - The Lander volleyball team honored senior Andrea Crawford on Friday evening at Finis Horne Arena as the Bearcats fell to Augusta in straight sets in Peach Belt Conference action.

The Bearcats (7-16, 4-8 PBC) lost in straight sets, 25-14, 25-22, and 25-14. Augusta improved to 10-16 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

Freshman Gracelyn America led the Bearcats offensively with a match-high 11 kills on a .233 hitting percentage. Quinn Butler and Olivia Shaw followed with four kills apiece, while Shaw added a team-high three blocks.

Defensively, Sam Alwardt recorded a team-high 10 digs, while Butler and Krista Lauck added five each. Freshman setter Madeline Green finished with 11 assists, while Emma Greenier contributed four assists and a service ace.

Lander opened the first set with a kill from America before Augusta used an eight-point run to build a 10-2 advantage. The Bearcats looked to cut into the deficit late in the frame, with back-to-back service aces from Browning bringing the score to 22-12. However, the Jaguars maintained their lead to take the opening set 25-14.

The Bearcats responded with a stronger effort in the second set, taking an early 2-0 lead behind a kill from America. After Augusta moved ahead 13-9, Lander put together a four-point run highlighted by an Alwardt service ace and a kill from Ryleigh Willard to tie the score at 13-13.

Trailing 16-14, the Bearcats rallied for four consecutive points behind kills from America and Shaw, a block from Shaw and America, and an Augusta attack error to take an 18-16 lead. Lander held a narrow 21-19 lead before the Jaguars answered with four straight points to take a 23-21 lead. A kill from Butler cut the deficit to one, but Augusta secured the final two points to claim the set 25-22.

In the third set, Lander kept things close early, with kills from America and a Greenier service ace helping the Bearcats stay within two at 6-4. However, Augusta used a five-point run to extend its advantage to 13-5.

The Bearcats continued to compete, with a kill from Lauck and a block from Shaw and Willard highlighting a late three-point run. Augusta maintained control down the stretch to secure the 25-14 victory and complete the sweep.

Lander finished with 24 kills, five service aces, three blocks and 32 digs. Augusta recorded 44 kills on a .340 hitting percentage.

The Bearcats will return to Finis Horne Arena on Saturday, Oct. 31, to conclude their two-match Peach Belt Conference series against Augusta. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
