Lander Sweeps Middle Georgia to Move to 2-0 in PBC Play

GREENWOOD - Lander volleyball continued its strong start to Peach Belt Conference play Saturday afternoon, sweeping Middle Georgia 3-0 inside Finis Horne Arena to improve to 2-0 in league play.

The Bearcats (5-6, 2-0 PBC) earned their third straight win with set scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-15 over the Knights (2-12, 0-2 PBC).

Quinn Butler led Lander with 11 kills, while Amelia May added 10 kills on a .438 hitting percentage and a match-high four blocks. Ryleigh Willard finished with nine kills and three blocks, while Karson Browning added eight kills.

Freshman setter Madeline Green dished out 35 assists while contributing five kills on a .455 hitting percentage. Sam Alwardt anchored the Bearcat defense with a match-high 23 digs.

The opening set stayed close before Lander pulled away late for the 25-22 win. The Bearcats recorded 13 kills in the frame while holding Middle Georgia to a .000 hitting percentage.

Lander found its rhythm offensively in the second set, putting down 18 kills and hitting .261. The Bearcats created separation on their way to a 25-18 win and a 2-0 match lead.

The Bearcats carried the momentum into the third, producing their best offensive set of the afternoon with a .343 hitting percentage. Lander also took control at the net midway through the frame, using three consecutive blocks involving Browning, Willard, and Olivia Shaw to build a 14-7 advantage.

Middle Georgia couldn't recover as Lander closed out the set 25-15 to secure its second sweep of the season and remain unbeaten in conference play.

The Bearcats nearly doubled the Knights in kills, finishing with a 47-23 advantage while outhitting Middle Georgia .238 to .019. Lander also held advantages in assists (42-23), digs (59-51) and service aces (4-0).

The win marked Lander's third straight overall after victories over Paine and Georgia College and completed a 2-0 opening weekend of Peach Belt Conference play.

Lander hits the road Tuesday for a conference matchup with Augusta at 6 p.m. in Augusta, Ga.
