Lander Drops Pair on Opening Day of VSU Fall Tournament

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Lander volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the opening day of the VSU Fall Tournament on Friday, falling 3-0 to host Valdosta State before coming up just short in a five-set battle with Rollins inside The Complex.

The Bearcats moved to 2-6 overall after the two matches, with the nightcap coming down to a decisive fifth set after Lander held multiple opportunities to close out Rollins in the fourth.

Match One: Valdosta State 3, Lander 0

Lander opened the day against tournament host Valdosta State, falling 25-16, 25-18 and 25-20.

Quinn Butler led the Bearcat attack with eight kills while hitting .188 and adding eight digs. Freshman Gracelyn America followed with six kills on a .250 hitting percentage, while Karson Browning added five.

Emma Greenier directed the offense with 18 assists and five digs, while Sam Alwardt led Lander defensively with 16 digs and recorded both of the Bearcats' service aces.

The Bearcats struggled to find an offensive rhythm early, hitting -.026 in the opening frame while Valdosta State produced 18 kills on a .333 clip to take the first set 25-16.

Lander improved offensively as the match progressed, hitting .125 in the second and a match-best .189 in the third. The Bearcats recorded 11 kills in the final frame and held Valdosta State to a .182 hitting percentage, but the Blazers closed out the match with a 25-20 victory.

Valdosta State finished with advantages in kills (45-27), assists (37-23), service aces (7-2) and digs (70-56), while the teams each recorded five total blocks.

Match Two: Rollins 3, Lander 2

Lander responded with a much stronger showing in the nightcap, taking Rollins to five sets before falling 25-17, 12-25, 25-20, 25-27 and 8-15.

Butler turned in one of the strongest performances of her career, recording a career-high 19 kills while adding 13 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Browning added 11 kills on a .200 hitting percentage, while junior Olivia Shaw finished with six kills on a team-best .278 clip.

Greenier ran the Lander offense with a season-high 37 assists and added 14 digs for a double-double of her own. Alwardt once again anchored the back row with a team-high 20 digs and three service aces.

The Bearcats took control early, holding Rollins to a .000 hitting percentage in the opening set on the way to a 25-17 victory. The Tars answered in the second, hitting .464 to even the match with a 25-12 win.

Lander regained momentum in the third. The Bearcats put down 14 kills and held Rollins to a .093 hitting percentage to take the frame 25-20 and move within one set of the match victory.

The fourth turned into the defining set of the night. Lander built a 24-20 advantage and stood one point away from securing the match, but Rollins battled back. The Bearcats later regained match point at 25-24 following a kill from Butler, but the Tars answered with three consecutive points to steal the set 27-25 and force a deciding fifth.

Lander recorded a match-high 19 kills and hit .265 in the fourth but was unable to finish off the Tars.

Rollins carried the momentum into the fifth set and never surrendered the lead. The Tars hit .276 in the deciding frame while holding Lander to three kills and a .038 hitting percentage to take the set 15-8 and close out the match.

Despite the loss, Lander finished with six service aces to Rollins' four and recorded 51 kills, its second-highest total of the season behind the 52 produced in last week's win over Shorter. 

Lander will close out the VSU Fall Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 12, against Paine College at 1 p.m.
