Alwardt Earns PBC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week Honors

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Lander volleyball's junior captain Sam Alwardt was named the Peach Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

The honor is the first weekly conference award of Alwardt's career. This season, the PBC split its former Specialist of the Week award into two categories, Defensive Player of the Week and Setter of the Week.

Alwardt totaled 41 digs across 10 sets during the Bearcats' opening weekend, averaging 4.10 digs per set. She also recorded 12 assists and six service aces over three matches.

The junior opened the season with 17 digs, seven assists and a season-high four aces in Lander's 3-1 victory over Converse on Thursday.

Alwardt followed with a career-high 20 digs against No. 13 Wingate on Friday. She closed the weekend with four digs and two aces against UVA Wise on Saturday.

Through the first three matches of the season, Alwardt leads the Bearcats with 41 digs and six service aces.

Catch Alwardt and the Bearcats back in action Friday, Sept. 4, when Lander travels to Aiken, S.C., to face Montevallo in a neutral-site match at the USCA Invitational. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
