Bearcats Fall to UVA Wise in Redderson Invitational Finale

GREENWOOD - The Lander volleyball team closed out the Redderson Invitational on Saturday night, falling 3-0 to UVA Wise inside Finis Horne Arena.

The Bearcats (1-2) dropped the opening set 25-16 before battling the Cavaliers (1-2) down to the wire in each of the final two frames. UVA Wise held off a late Lander push for a 25-23 victory in the second before taking an extended third set, 27-25, to seal the match.

Freshman Gracelyn America led the Bearcat offense with eight kills while hitting a team-best .333. She also added three blocks and a service ace to finish with a team-high 10.5 points. Quinn Butler followed with six kills and six digs, while Amelia May recorded five kills on a .286 hitting percentage.

Madeline Green directed the offense with 22 assists to go along with four kills, seven digs, and two blocks. Junior Olivia Shaw continued to make an impact at the net, finishing with a match-high six blocks. Krista Lauck provided a spark off the bench after entering the match in the second set, finishing with a team-high nine digs while adding five kills.

UVA Wise jumped out in front in the opening set, with Lander tying the frame at 1-1 and again at 4-4 but never taking the lead. The Cavaliers eventually created separation and held the Bearcats to seven kills and a -.083 hitting percentage on the way to a 25-16 victory.

The Cavaliers scored first again in the second, but Lander answered and took an early lead. UVA Wise pulled even at 10-10 before moving back in front and maintaining the advantage into the later stages of the set. Facing a late deficit, the Bearcats clawed their way back and tied the frame at 21-21 before an ace from America put Lander back in front, 22-21. The Cavaliers responded, however, scoring four of the final five points to escape with a 25-23 win and take a 2-0 match advantage.

UVA Wise once again grabbed the early advantage in the third, but Lander refused to go away. The Bearcats battled back to even the set at 15-15 before the two sides traded points throughout the closing stretch. Lander produced its best offensive performance of the match in the frame, putting down 12 kills while hitting .231. Neither team could create separation late, pushing the set past 25 before UVA Wise scored the final two points to take the frame 27-25 and complete the sweep.

Lander held a 7-3 advantage in blocks, with Shaw accounting for six and America adding three. The Cavaliers finished with advantages in kills (42-30), assists (40-29), service aces (9-5) and digs (51-37).

The Bearcats wrap up the Redderson Invitational with a 1-2 record after opening the 2026 campaign with a 3-1 victory over Converse on Thursday before falling to No. 13 Wingate and UVA Wise. Butler recorded double-doubles in each of Lander's first two matches, while several newcomers made immediate contributions throughout the opening weekend.

Lander returns to action Friday, Sept. 4, when the Bearcats travel to Aiken, S.C., to face Montevallo at the USCA Invitational for a neutral-site match. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
