KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C.----Jake Amos and Brian Newton each shot 2-under par 70s Monday to pace the Lander men's golf team to the first-round lead of the Kiawah Island Invitational hosted by three-time defending NCAA Division II national champion USC Aiken. The two-day tournament, which resumes on Tuesday, is being played at the 6,875-yard Cougar Point Golf Course.
Lander, in only its second year of competition, shot a low 4-over par 292 and was followed by: 2. Belmont Abbey 293, 3. Washburn 294, 4. Presbyterian 295, 5. Armstrong Atlantic 296, 6. Clayton State and USC Aiken 303, 8. Pfeiffer and USC Upstate 205, 10. Georgia Southwestern 310, 11. Carson-Newman 312, 12. Georgia College 316, 13. Lenoir-Rhyne and Newberry 317, 15. Coker 319 and 16. UNC Pembroke 324.
Amos and Newton were tied for second in the 80-man field, followed by teammates Billy Belair 16th with a 74, Cooper Tinsley 38th with 78, and Charlie Hoyle 53rd with an 80.
