GREENWOOD – Columbus State held Lander to only five field goals in the first half and cruised to an 86-46 victory in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball Saturday night at Horne Arena.
Columbus State improved to 12-10 overall and 5-7 in the Peach Belt. Lander, which dressed only six players, fell to 4-15, 0-12.
Cherwonna Walker led four Columbus double-figure scorers with 17 points, Erin Gibbs had 13 points, Abena Bosia 12, and Shanrika Hardeman 10. Karina Pulici had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Lady Cougars while Walker added 10 boards.
Shatora Irby led the Lady Bearcats with 17 points while Jennifer Hukill added 11. Tara Nyikavaranda had nine points and a game-high nine rebounds for Lander.
Columbus outscored the Lady Bearcats 23-5 over the last 10:45 of the first half to build a 33-16 halftime lead. Irby's 3-pointer gave Lander an 11-10 lead with 10:58 left. The Lady Cougars scored the next 15 points, including seven by Gibbs, to lead 25-11 with 4:51 to go.
The Lady Bearcats shot 5-for-31 from the floor (16 percent) in the first half, including only one field goal over the last 10:58.
Columbus State blew the game open further in the second half with a 20-1 run, extending a 54-32 lead at the 11:51 mark to 74-33 with 6:02 to go. The Lady Cougars led by as many as 43.
Lander finished the game making 12-of-50 shots from the floor (24 percent), 15-of-24 from the free-throw line (63 percent), and 7-of-19 from 3-point range (37 percent). Columbus hit 32-of-74 shots from the floor (43 percent), 18-of-27 from the line (67 percent), and 4-of-11 from behind the arc. Columbus out-rebounded the Lady Bearcats 63-25.
