GREENWOOD----The Lander softball team swept all three of its games this weekend to claim the championship of the annual Bearcat Classic. Other participating teams were: UMass-Lowell, UVA-Wise and West Virginia Wesleyan College. (Bearcat Classic web page).
With the wins, Lander improves to 9-11-1 overall. UMass-Lowell finished second with a 2-1 record, while West Virginia Wesleyan finished 1-2 and UVA-Wise was 0-3.
Lander 8, UVA-Wise 4
Ashlea Burdette (6-3) earned the victory, striking out four, walking one and allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in the complete seven innings. For Lander, Keri Davis went 1-for-4 with one triple and one run scored, while Melissa Ryals (1-for-3, one run), Lib Harris (2-for-4, two runs) and Rachelle Lawrence (2-for-3, one run) all doubled. Colleen Leggieri also went 2-for-4.
Lander 4, UMass-Lowell 3
Jenna Kellett (2-4) was awarded the win, striking out two, walking five and allowing three earned runs on six hits in six innings pitched. For Lander, Davis went 2-for-3 with one triple, one double, two runs scored and two RBI. Melissa Ryals went 2-for-3 with one run scored and Burdette went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Lander 13, West Virginia Wesleyan 5
Burdette (7-3) earned the win, walking one and allowing three earned runs on six hits in two innings pitched. In relief, Austin Murray struck out three, walked six and allowed two runs on three hits in four innings pitched. Leggieri went 3-for-4 with two homeruns, two runs scored and five RBI, while Davis went 1-for-4 with one double, one run scored and two RBI. Burdette went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Lawrence went 2-for-4.
