Bearcats Explode Late to Salvage Doubleheader Split at Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Lander softball salvaged a split in Saturday's doubleheader with Georgia College, bouncing back in dominant fashion after a narrow Game One loss. Despite the split, the Bearcats dropped the PBC series 2-1.

Game One: Georgia College 4, Lander 3

Lander struck early but couldn't hold off a midgame push from Georgia College in a 4-3 loss to open the day.

The Bearcats (26-15, 12-8 PBC) jumped ahead in the first inning when Samantha Bumgarner delivered a two-run single to center, scoring Isabella Santos and Emorie Anderson. Bumgarner finished 3-for-4 with all three RBIs.

Georgia College (25-15, 13-7 PBC) answered in the third, capitalizing on a Lander error as Emily Hobbs tied the game with a two-run double. The Bobcats took control in the fourth, plating two runs on an RBI single and a fielder's choice.

Lander threatened late, cutting the deficit to one in the seventh on Bumgarner's RBI double, but left the tying run stranded. Paige Sherman (7-6) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits over six innings. Tiffany Caban (7-4) earned the complete-game win, striking out seven.

Game Two: Lander 12, Georgia College 4

The Bearcats responded emphatically in the nightcap, erupting for 18 hits in a 12-4 rout to earn the split.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Lander answered with three runs in the second, highlighted by Bumgarner's solo home run and RBI singles from Kara VonAchen and Emorie Anderson. The Bearcats steadily built the lead before breaking the game open with a seven-run seventh inning.

Emily Allen and Reagan Hill each drove in two runs during the final frame, while Isabella Santos, Bella Angeli, and Bumgarner added RBIs to cap the offensive surge.

Lander's lineup produced contributions throughout, with Santos going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Hill finishing 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and Allen adding two hits and two RBIs.

Mattye Geddings (13-3) earned the win, allowing three runs over five innings, while Anna Phifer secured the save with two innings of relief.

Despite the offensive outburst in Game Two, the Bearcats leave the weekend having dropped the series, moving to 27-15 overall and 13-8 in conference play.

Lander returns home Tuesday to host Tusculum in a nonconference doubleheader at Doug Spears Field, with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
