Lander Powers Past Tusculum to Cap Nonconference Slate

GREENWOOD - The Lander softball team closed out its nonconference schedule in emphatic fashion Tuesday, sweeping Tusculum in a home doubleheader at Doug Spears Field. Lander took Game 1, 5-1, before rolling to an 8-0 shutout in five innings in Game 2.

The Bearcats improved to 29-15 overall, finishing nonconference play with momentum on both sides of the ball.

Game 1: Lander 5, Tusculum 1

Lander broke open a scoreless game with a three-run third inning and never looked back behind a strong pitching performance from Mattye Geddings.

Isabella Santos put the Bearcats on the board with an RBI single, and Bella Angeli delivered the big swing with a two-run double to make it 3-0. Tusculum's lone run came in the fifth inning on an unearned play, but Lander responded immediately.

Angeli struck again in the bottom half of the inning, blasting a two-run home run, her sixth of the season, to left-center to extend the lead to 5-1 and provide all the insurance needed.

Geddings (14-3) was efficient in the circle, allowing just four hits and no earned runs over seven innings while striking out three.

Offensively, Angeli led the way with two hits and four RBIs, while Santos added two hits and scored twice. Reagan Hill chipped in with two hits as part of Lander's eight-hit effort.

Game 2: Lander 8, Tusculum 0 (5 innings)

The Bearcats wasted no time completing the sweep, erupting for four runs in the first inning and cruising the rest of the way.

Samantha Bumgarner opened the scoring with an RBI single, and Ava Perkins followed with a two-run single that turned into a three-run play after a Tusculum error, giving Lander a 4-0 advantage.

Lander continued to apply pressure, adding runs in the third and fourth innings before putting the game away in the fifth. Chloe Manders delivered a two-run single up the middle to cap the scoring.

Paige Sherman (8-6) combined with Anna Phifer for the shutout, limiting Tusculum to five hits while not issuing a walk.

Lander's offense stayed aggressive throughout, racking up 14 hits as Ava Perkins paced the lineup with a perfect 3-for-3 outing and two RBIs, Reagan Hill matched her with three hits of her own, Samantha Bumgarner contributed two hits and scored twice, and Emily Allen reached base three times, highlighted by a double.

Lander returns to Doug Spears Field this weekend to host the University of South Carolina Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference series, beginning Friday at 5 p.m. before concluding with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m. on Senior Day.
