GREENWOOD – North Georgia College and State University placed six players in double figures and stayed unbeaten in the Peach Belt Conference with a 105-60 victory over Lander Wednesday night in women's basketball at Horne Arena.
North Georgia improved to 8-3 overall and 4-0 in the Peach Belt. The Lady Bearcats dropped to 3-6, 0-3.
Megan Huffman led the Saints with 18 points, Jenica Johnson scored 16, Syretha Marble 14, Jeanine Dorminey 12, and Lara Seamon and Rachael Jolley 10 apiece. North Georgia outrebounded Lander 58-38 with Dorminey grabbing a team-high 10 boards. Katie Williamson added eight points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Bearcats, playing without second-leading scorer Bryony Crouch (15.9 ppg) due to injury, were led by Shatora Irby's game-high 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. Tara Nyikavaranda posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds while adding four blocked shots. Jennifer Hukill added 11 points.
North Georgia led just 13-11 with 13:50 left in the first half before hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to start a 27-10 run. The Saints shot 48 percent from the floor in the first half (23-for-48) and led by as many as 25 points, 50-25, with 2:45 to go. Megan Huffman had 14 points, Marble 12 and Johnson 10 as North Georgia built a 55-32 halftime lead. Irby was the lone bright spot for Lander in the first half, hitting all four of her shots from the floor and scoring 11 points.
The Saints maintained their large lead in the second half. Their largest lead was 39 points, 94-55, in the final minutes.
For the game, Lander shot 33 percent from the floor (23-for-69), 56 percent from the free-throw line (10-for-18), and 29 percent from behind the 3-point line (4-for-14). North Georgia hit 48 percent from the floor (42-for-88), 94 percent from the line (15-for-16), and 30 percent from behind the arc (6-for-20). The Lady Bearcats committed 20 turnovers to North Georgia's nine.
