Golfers 11th of 17 after first day of Kiawah Island Inv.

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C.----The rebirth of the Lander mens' golf team got off to a good start Monday as the Bearcats are 11th of 17 teams at the Kiawah Island Invitational. The last time Lander fielded a golf team was in 1978-79.

Freshmen Billy Belair and Cooper Tinsley each shot a 74 to lead the Bearcats, while Brian Cote and Justin Gupton shot 81 each. Mark Vanadia came in at 82.

Two-time NCAA Division II national champion USC Aiken leads the team standings with 292. Pfeiffer and Coker are tied for second at 297, followed by Armstrong Atlantic 300, Presbyterian 301, Newberry 303, Carson-Newman 305, Tusculum 306, Lenoir-Rhyne and Clayton State 307, Lander 310, USC Upstate 311, Georgia College & State University and North Greenville 313, Catawba 314, UNC Pembroke 318, and Barton 319.

USC Aiken's Dane Burkhart leads the individual competition with a 6-under par 66.

The final day of the 36-hole tournament will be held Tuesday.
