Lander Drops Doubleheader at Columbus State to Close Regular Season

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Lander softball wrapped up its regular season Sunday with a pair of losses in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Columbus State, falling 12-4 in Game 1 and 5-2 in Game 2 at Cougar Field.

Despite the setbacks, the Bearcats (32-18, 16-11 PBC) showed resilience throughout the day and finished the weekend series 1-2 following Saturday's 12-4 run-rule victory.

Game 1: Columbus State 12, Lander 4

Columbus State surged ahead early, plating nine runs across the first three innings to seize control.

A three-run home run in the opening inning gave the Cougars the lead, and a five-run third inning, highlighted by another three-run homer and a two-run single, extended the advantage to 9-0.

Lander responded in the fourth with a three-run rally. Samantha Bumgarner sparked the offense with an RBI single, Devon Kokoszka followed with a run-scoring hit, and Kara VonAchen added an RBI groundout to cut into the deficit.

Bumgarner delivered again in the fifth with an RBI double, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Bearcats. Reagan Hill also scored twice in the effort.

Columbus State added runs in the fourth and sixth innings, including a pair of solo home runs, to pull away with the six-inning run-rule victory.

Paige Sherman (8-8) took the loss after allowing nine runs (seven earned) in 2.2 innings. Lander collected seven hits and drew four walks but committed three errors.

Game 2: Columbus State 5, Lander 2

The Bearcats were more competitive in the nightcap, briefly taking the lead before late home runs swung the game.

Trailing 1-0, Lander answered in the fourth inning. Bella Angeli delivered an RBI single to tie the game, and Samantha Bumgarner followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Bearcats a 2-1 edge.

Columbus State responded in the fifth with a two-run home run to reclaim the lead, then added another two-run homer in the sixth to extend the margin to 5-2.

Lander was limited to two hits but remained patient at the plate, drawing four walks. Emily Allen recorded a hit, while Angeli drove in one run.

Mattye Geddings (17-4) went the distance in the circle, allowing five runs on six hits. Lander's defense played cleanly in the finale after committing three errors in Game 1.

Lander will await its seeding for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, which will be announced later. The North Georgia Nighthawks will host the tournament in Dahlonega, Georgia, after UNG secured the regular-season title.

Fans can stay tuned to Lander's official athletics website for updates on seeding and scheduling.
