No. 4 Seed Lander Rallies Past No. 5 USC Aiken in PBC Quarterfinal

DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The No. 4 seed Lander softball team erased an early four-run deficit Friday night and held off No. 5 seed USC Aiken for a 7-6 victory in the quarterfinal round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

With the win, Lander improved to 33-18 overall and advanced to the PBC Tournament semifinals, where it will face top-seeded North Georgia on Saturday, May 9, at 2:30 p.m. in Dahlonega, Ga.

USC Aiken (28-26) jumped out to a fast start in the top of the first inning, scoring four runs on four hits to take an early 4-0 lead.

The Bearcats answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning.

Bella Angeli drew a bases-loaded RBI walk to put Lander on the board. Samantha Bumgarner followed with a two-run single up the middle to trim the deficit to 4-3 after the opening frame.

Lander tied the game in the second inning when Reagan Hill grounded out to third base, allowing Emily Allen to score from third and make it 4-4.

USC Aiken regained the lead in the fourth inning on a two-run home run to left field, moving back in front 6-4.

The Bearcats responded again in the fifth inning.

Hill opened the inning with a single before Angeli delivered an RBI double to right-center to cut the deficit to one. Bumgarner tied the game moments later with an RBI triple down the right-field line before Ava Perkins gave Lander its first lead of the night with an RBI infield single.

Lander held the 7-6 advantage the rest of the way behind strong relief pitching from Paige Sherman.

Sherman entered in relief in the fourth inning and tossed four scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while earning the win to improve to 9-8 on the season.

Hill led the Bearcats offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Bumgarner drove in a team-high three runs, while Angeli added two RBIs and a double. Allen reached base four times with a hit and three walks.

USC Aiken finished with 12 hits, but the Bearcats held the Pacers scoreless over the final three innings to secure the comeback victory.
