No. 23 Lander Battles No. 14 North Georgia in Narrow 4-3 Road Loss

DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The No. 23 Lander men's tennis team delivered a hard-fought performance Friday afternoon but came up just short in a 4-3 Peach Belt Conference loss to No. 14 North Georgia.

Lander (10-4, 2-2 PBC) opened the match strong by securing the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 1. Anton Krondell and Max Barriere set the tone with a quick 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles, finishing first on the court. Brendan Jayaprakash and Harry Pugh followed with a 6-3 win at the top spot to clinch the point for the Bearcats.

In singles play, North Georgia (10-5, 2-1 PBC) responded early, taking straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 2 to swing momentum and take a 2-1 lead.

Lander answered at No. 5 singles, where Ismail ElShafei secured a key straight-set victory, 7-6, 6-3, to even the match at 2-2.

The Nighthawks regained control with a three-set win at No. 6 singles, edging Jayaprakash 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to move ahead 3-2. Shortly after, North Georgia added another point at No. 3 singles, as Krondell fell in a tight two-set battle, 7-6, 6-4, giving the hosts a 4-2 advantage and setting up the clinch.

At the top of the lineup, No. 21 nationally ranked Harry Pugh capped the match with an impressive comeback, rallying to defeat No. 4 nationally ranked Pedro Liborio, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-0), at No. 1 singles.

Lander returns home Saturday, April 11, to host Middle Georgia at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center in a 10:30 a.m. conference matchup, where the Bearcats will also celebrate Senior Day.
