No. 22 Lander Tops Middle Georgia on Senior Day, Remains Perfect at Home

GREENWOOD - No. 22 Lander men's tennis celebrated Senior Day with a 5-2 victory over Middle Georgia in Peach Belt Conference action Saturday morning at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center, improving to a perfect 6-0 at home this season.

The Bearcats (11-4, 3-2 PBC) opened the day by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. seniors Benjamin Bates and Ismail ElShafei set the tone with a 6-2 victory over Duarte Mestre and Alejandro Vizoso at No. 2 doubles. Anton Krondell and Max Barriere followed with a 6-4 win against Vicente Faria and Nick Dufner on court three to secure the early 1-0 lead. The nationally ranked No. 9 doubles pair of Harry Pugh and Brendan Jayaprakash saw their match go unfinished.

In singles play, Lander quickly doubled its lead as No. 10 nationally ranked Harry Pugh earned a win by retirement at No. 1 singles after taking the opening set 6-3 against Vizoso.
Krondell extended the advantage to 3-0 with a straight-sets victory at No. 4 singles, defeating Mestre 7-5, 6-2.

Middle Georgia (4-8, 1-2 PBC) responded with a win at No. 2 singles, as Daniel Garcia Suarez rallied past Barriere in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Bearcats moved within one point of the match clinch at No. 5 singles, where ElShafei battled back for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Faria to make it 4-1.

Brendan Jayaprakash delivered the clincher at No. 6 singles, outlasting Michal Glocman in a tightly contested three-set match, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), securing the 5-2 win for Lander.

Middle Georgia picked up the final point at No. 3 singles, where Alexandr Achour edged Julian Peter in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

With the win, Lander remains unbeaten at home this season and continues conference play with momentum.

Lander will close out the regular season on the road against No. 6 Columbus State on Sunday, April 19, at 11 a.m. in Columbus, Ga., in a key Peach Belt Conference matchup.
