No. 5 Columbus State Defeats No. 22 Lander 6-1

COLUMBUS, Ga. - No. 22 Lander men's tennis dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 5 Columbus State on Sunday at the Walden Tennis Center, with the home side securing the doubles point early and controlling singles play throughout.

Columbus State (17-2, 6-0 PBC) claimed the opening point by taking two of three doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, Thomas Cardona and Samer Al Tori defeated Lander's Ismail ElShafei and Benjamin Bates 6-1. The Cougars followed with another 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles, where Daniel Hammond and Benedek Szombathelyi topped Anton Krondell and Max Barriere.

Lander's nationally ranked duo of Harry Pugh and Brendan Jayaprakash, ranked No. 12, edged Andrea Sandrone and Elias Peter 4-3 in the unfinished No. 1 match.

In singles, Columbus State quickly extended its lead. No. 30 Cardona, ranked nationally, defeated No. 8 Pugh 7-5, 6-1 at the top position. At No. 2, No. 30 Hugo Didier rolled past Barriere 6-2, 6-1 to make it 3-0.

The Cougars clinched the match at No. 3 singles, where Yike Liu outlasted Julian Peter in a three-set battle, 6-1, 6-7 (9-7), 1-0 (11-9), giving Columbus State a 4-0 advantage.

Columbus State added two more points in tight matches. Sandrone rallied past Krondell 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 at No. 4, and Al Tori defeated ElShafei 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.

Lander (11-5, 3-3 PBC) avoided the sweep at No. 5 singles, where Jayaprakash secured a straight-sets win over Hammond, 6-4, 6-3.

The Bearcats will now await seeding for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, set for April 24-26 at the John W. Walden Tennis Center in Columbus, Ga., hosted by Columbus State.
