Pugh, Jayaprakash Capture ITA Southeast Regional Doubles Title, Punch Tickets to Nationals

SUMTER, S.C. - The Lander men's tennis team wrapped up competition at the ITA Division II Southeast Regional Championships on Monday, highlighted by Harry Pugh and Brendan Jayaprakash capturing the doubles title and Pugh finishing as the singles runner-up at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

The eighth-seeded duo secured the regional doubles title with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Radu Florea and Jakub Hrasek of Lincoln Memorial, earning an automatic berth in the ITA Division II Individual National Championships.

Pugh and Jayaprakash returned to the championship match for the second consecutive year after finishing as runners-up last season. The duo went undefeated through five matches over four days, dropping just 16 games en route to the regional title.

"It was great to see Harry and Brendan win the regional after being finalists the previous year," Lander head coach Brett Simpson said. "It's an achievement they can be really proud of, and they were very deserving of the win. They played well throughout the tournament and lost only 16 games in five matches. It was a reflection of the quality of doubles they played over the last four days, and they thoroughly deserved the title."

In singles, top-seeded Pugh fell to second-seeded Simon Malis of Flagler, 6-3, 6-3, in Monday's championship match, finishing as the regional runner-up for the second consecutive year.

Despite the loss, Pugh also earned a berth in the ITA Division II Individual National Championships, as both regional singles champions and finalists qualify automatically.

Pugh and Jayaprakash will represent Lander at the ITA Division II Individual National Championships, scheduled for Nov. 4-8 at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Pugh will compete in both singles and doubles, while Jayaprakash will compete in doubles.
