Lander Falls to USCA in First Game of Series

GREENWOOD - A Ryan Hansen three-run homer in the third inning brought the Lander baseball team within three, but a six-run fourth by USCA proved too much to overcome as the Pacers took a 15-5 win in seven innings on Thursday evening at Dolny Stadium in the opening game of a Peach Belt Conference series.

USCA jumped out early, plating four runs in the second on a two-run single and a two-run homer. The Pacers added two more in the third to extend the lead to 6-0.

Lander threatened in the bottom of the third as the first two batters reached, but two quick outs put the rally in jeopardy. Hansen answered by launching a 1-1 pitch over the left center field fence to cut the deficit to 6-3.

However, USCA responded immediately, scoring the next eight runs, including a six-run fourth inning, to build a 14-3 advantage.

The Bearcats showed some life in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs. A bases-loaded walk by Landen Still and a sacrifice fly from Caden Crews brought home a pair, but Lander could not trim the deficit any further.

USCA added a run in the seventh to push the lead back to ten and closed the game by retiring the Bearcats in order in the bottom half to secure the run-rule victory.

The two teams continue the series tomorrow at 5 p.m. at Dolny Stadium.
