Still’s Walk-Off Clinches Series Win Over GSW

GREENWOOD, S.C. - One day after a standout performance at the plate and in the field, Landen Still delivered again with a walk-off RBI single to lift the Lander baseball team to a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Georgia Southwestern on Saturday afternoon at Dolny Stadium, clinching the Peach Belt Conference series.

Lander trailed by as many as three runs entering the sixth inning and managed just two hits through the first six frames before mounting its rally.

Zach Cowart led off the game with a double and later scored on a wild pitch to give Lander a 1-0 lead in the first. The Hurricanes answered with a run in the second, tying the game at 1-1 for the second straight day.

Georgia Southwestern took control in the middle innings, scoring on a double play in the third before adding a solo homer and an RBI single to build a 4-1 advantage.

Lander's offense was limited early, with Oliver Zohn's infield single accounting for the only hit after the first inning until the seventh.

The Bearcats began to chip away in the sixth without recording a hit. Zohn was hit by a pitch and Pip Smalley walked to open the inning, and Zohn later scored on a groundout by Still to make it 4-2.

In the seventh, Cooper Backman doubled down the left-field line to snap the drought and later scored on an error to cut the deficit to one.

Brody Winter tied the game in the eighth with an RBI double, putting the go-ahead run at third, but the Hurricanes escaped further damage.

Nolan Alexander relieved Jake Larson, who turned in seven innings of work, and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth by inducing a flyout to Zohn in center to keep the game tied.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Hansen was hit by a pitch with one out. After Zohn was robbed of a potential walk-off hit by a strong defensive play in right field, Smalley singled to move Hansen into scoring position. Still followed with a line drive over the right fielder's head to bring Hansen home and secure the win.

The two teams conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Dolny Stadium.
