Lander Falls at No. 13 North Georgia in PBC Road Match

DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The Lander University women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 Peach Belt Conference decision on the road Thursday afternoon against No. 13 North Georgia at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.

The Bearcats (8-5, 1-2 PBC) were unable to secure the doubles point to start the match. North Georgia's nationally ranked duo of Anastasiia Opolska and Olesya Stokusova, ranked No. 23 in doubles, earned a 6-4 win at No. 1, while the Nighthawks clinched the point with a 6-1 victory at No. 3. Lander's No. 2 pair of Ella Sowman and Sydney Caulder was locked in a tight 5-4 contest that went unfinished.

North Georgia (13-5, 3-1 PBC) carried that momentum into singles play, sweeping all six courts, though Lander showed resistance in stretches.

The Nighthawks secured their first singles point at No. 3, where Sofia Giraldo earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sydney Caulder. At No. 6, Victoria Niox-Chateau defeated Ella Sowman 6-2, 6-1. Shortly after, Olesya Stokusova followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Evelyn Altmaier at No. 2.

Linn Goerdes extended the lead with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Thilda Danielsson at No. 4, and Emily Bush made it 5-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bailee Martin at No. 5.

At the top of the lineup, Maria Jose Zarza provided one of Lander's strongest moments, taking the opening set against No. 13 Anastasiia Opolska before falling 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Lander will return home Saturday, April 11, to face No. 42 Middle Georgia at 11 a.m. at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center in another Peach Belt Conference matchup.
