Women’s Tennis Secures Home Win Over Barton, 5-2

GREENWOOD - The Lander women's tennis team secured a 5-2 victory over Barton College Sunday morning at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center, using a doubles point and depth in singles play to earn the win.

Lander (6-4) opened the match by claiming the doubles point, taking two of three courts. Evelyn Altmaier and Maria Jose Zarza set the tone with a dominant 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Micaela Pallete and Thilda Danielsson followed shortly after with a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point.

Barton's lone doubles win came at No. 2, where Sydney Caulder and Ella Sowman fell 6-3.

In singles play, the Bearcats quickly built momentum. Zarza extended the lead to 2-0 with a straight-sets 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles.

Barton responded with back-to-back wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to even the match at 2-2, as Caulder fell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 and Danielsson dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 4.

Lander regained control from there, as Sowman delivered a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles to put the Bearcats back in front. Bailee Martin followed with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles, clinching the team match for Lander.

At the top spot, Altmaier sealed the victory in a hard-fought three-set battle, defeating Barton's Aarni Yellu 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 to clinch the match for the Bearcats.

The Bearcats face a quick turnaround and will look to keep the momentum going as they travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on Converse University on Monday, March 30, at 2 p.m.
