Bearcats Sweep Converse 7-0 in Dominant Road Victory

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Lander University women's tennis team delivered a commanding performance Monday afternoon, rolling to a 7-0 shutout over Converse University at the Sally Abney Rose Complex.

The Bearcats set the tone early in doubles play, claiming two of three matches to secure the opening point. The No. 1 pair of Evelyn Altmaier and Maria Jose Zarza wasted little time, earning a 6-2 victory to put Lander on the board.

Converse responded at No. 2 doubles, where Romy Rueff and Laurel Maynor edged Sydney Caulder and Ella Sowman, 6-4. Lander sealed the doubles point on court 3 as Thilda Danielsson and Micaela Pallete pulled out a 6-4 win.

Lander carried its momentum into singles, where it dominated across all six courts.

Altmaier quickly extended the Bearcats' lead, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles. Moments later, Zarza followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2, putting Lander firmly in control.

At No. 5, Bailee Martin added another decisive point with a 6-0, 6-1 victory, while Sowman matched that effort at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout.

Danielsson clinched another straight-sets win at No. 4, defeating Eliie Luppino 6-1, 6-2.

The final match to finish came at No. 3 singles, where Caulder battled through a three-set contest. After dropping the opening set in a tiebreak, she rebounded to take the next set 6-1 and secured the match with a 10-7 decision in the super tiebreak.

With the victory, Lander improves to 7-4 overall, while Converse falls to 6-7.

Lander returns to action Friday, hosting Georgia Southwestern in a Peach Belt Conference matchup at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
