Walk-Off Woes Continue for Lander in Saturday Doubleheader at Middle Georgia

COCHRAN, Ga. - The Lander softball team saw two hard-fought efforts slip away Saturday as Middle Georgia (10-16, 4-8 PBC) walked off both ends of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader, defeating the Bearcats 6-5 in each contest.

Despite outhitting or matching Middle Georgia across the two games, Lander (21-12, 7-5 PBC) could not close out late leads, as the Knights surged in the final innings to complete a three-game series sweep.

Game 1: Middle Georgia 6, Lander 5

In the first game of the day, Lander appeared in control for much of the afternoon, building a 5-1 lead behind steady offensive production. Reagan Hill and Samantha Bumgarner each collected two hits and one RBI each in the game.

The Knights chipped away before delivering the decisive blow in the bottom of the seventh. With two runs already across, the Knights launched a walk-off grand slam to right-center, erasing Lander's lead and handing Mattye Geddings just her second loss of the season despite 6.2 strong innings.

Lander jumped out early with two runs in the first inning and added single runs in the second, third, and fourth to maintain control, but could not find a shutdown inning late.

Game 2: Middle Georgia 6, Lander 5 (9 innings)

The final game of the series followed a similar script, though in a more back-and-forth affair that extended into extra innings.

Middle Georgia struck first with a two-run opening inning and added to its lead in the third and fourth. Lander responded with a steady rally, scoring once in the fourth, twice in the fifth, and adding two more in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.

Bella Angeli, Samantha Bumgarner and Reagan Hill each recorded two hits and an RBI to lead Lander's offense. Emorie Anderson also contributed an RBI as part of the comeback effort.

After both teams were held scoreless through the seventh and eighth innings, Middle Georgia ended the game in the ninth with a walk-off solo home run.

Freshman Cora Robinson took the loss in relief, allowing three runs (two earned) over five innings while keeping Lander in position to win.

Across the three-game series, all decided by walk-off fashion, Lander showed resilience offensively but struggled to secure the final outs, as Middle Georgia capitalized on late opportunities in each contest.

Lander returns home looking to turn the page as it hosts Augusta University in a PBC series beginning Friday, April 3, at 5 p.m. at Doug Spears Field.
