Lander walks off Augusta in PBC series opener

GREENWOOD, S.C. - Lander scored its only run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Augusta 1-0 in a Peach Belt Conference series opener Friday at Doug Spears Field.

The Bearcats were held without a hit through six innings before breaking through in the seventh. Isabella Santos opened the inning with a single to shortstop for Lander's first hit of the game. Cheyenne Jordan entered as a pinch runner, and Bella Angeli followed with a double to left field to move Jordan to third.

Chloe Manders then lifted a fly ball to left. Jordan scored on the play after a catcher's error and obstruction call, giving Lander the walk-off victory.

Mattye Geddings (9-2) earned the win for Lander (22-12, 8-5 PBC) in the circle with a complete-game shutout, the second of her career. She allowed six hits, walked one, and struck out one in seven innings.

Augusta (17-18, 7-5 PBC) threatened at times and finished with six hits, but could not break through against Geddings.

Lander finished with two hits, both in the seventh inning. Angeli's double was the Bearcats' only extra-base hit and helped set up the game's decisive run.

The teams continue the PBC series with a doubleheader Saturday in Greenwood. Game one is scheduled for noon at Doug Spears Field.
