GREENWOOD – If Saturday was a precursor to the remainder of the Peach Belt Conference portion of Lander's schedule, the men's lacrosse team has reason to be optimistic after marching to a 24-1 win over Virginia State at Van Taylor Stadium this afternoon.
The Bearcats welcomed – in a not-so-warm way – the Trojans into the PBC and boosted their record to 5-6, 1-0 while the Trojans fell to 1-6, 0-1 in their first game as a conference affiliate.
LU scored eight goals in each of the first two quarters as it led 16-1 by the end of the first half.
The Bearcats outpaced VSU 8-0 during the second half.
17 players scored for the Blue and Gold, including the first goals in the careers of
Nathaniel Ricciuti and
Blake Skoglin.
Carson Skinner led the Bearcats with a season-best four goals.
Brandon Perkins set a new personal season-high with four points on two goals and two assists.
Drew DeGeorge captured his first career multi-goal game, and
Matt Duarte and
Josh Rosa also scored a pair.
LU outshot VSU 68-12 and put 41 shots on target. Additionally, the Bearcats won 24 of 28 from the face-off X and converted on both of their man-up chances.
Lander heads to St. Augustine, Fla., for a game at Flagler next Saturday, March 28 at 1 p.m.
