Bearcats Sweep Sand Sharks, Move to 6-0 in Conference Play

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - The Lander softball team completed a dominant weekend in Peach Belt Conference play Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from USC Beaufort to secure a three-game series sweep. The Bearcats claimed a 6-1 victory in Game 1 before rolling to a 9-1 win in Game 2, improving to 16-7 overall and 6-0 in conference play following the second weekend of PBC action.

The sweep capped a strong weekend for Lander after Friday's 9-7 comeback win in the series opener.

Samantha Bumgarner and Savanna Price highlighted the offensive effort for Lander on Saturday, while Paige Sherman and Anna Phifer delivered strong outings in the circle. Bumgarner drove in three runs in the opener, while Price collected two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored in the nightcap.

Game One: Lander 6, USC Beaufort 1

Lander jumped out to an early lead and never looked back behind a complete-game performance from Paige Sherman.

The Bearcats struck quickly in the opening inning, plating three runs. Samantha Bumgarner delivered the first blow with an RBI double down the left-field line to score Emorie Anderson, and Lander added two more runs on an error and a groundout by Jadan Lee to take a 3-0 lead.

USC Beaufort pushed across an unearned run in the second inning, but Sherman settled in from there, keeping the Sand Sharks off the board the rest of the way.

Lander extended the lead in the third when Bumgarner singled to right-center to score Anderson. The Bearcats added another unearned run in the fourth and one more in the sixth, again driven in by Bumgarner, to make it 6-1.

Sherman (5-1) went the distance in the circle, allowing seven hits but just one run while striking out three in the complete-game effort.

Bumgarner led the offense, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Anderson scored twice, and Emily Allen, Kara VonAchen, and Bella Angeli each recorded hits.

Game Two: Lander 9, USC Beaufort 1

The Bearcats carried the momentum into the second game, using a big middle inning and a late offensive surge to secure the series sweep.

Lander opened the scoring in the third inning when Isabella Santos singled up the middle to bring home Allen.

The Bearcats broke the game open in the fourth inning with four runs. Savanna Price delivered an RBI single that brought home two runs, and Emorie Anderson followed with an RBI single of her own before aggressive baserunning saw Anderson steal home to extend the lead to 5-0.

USC Beaufort scored its lone run in the sixth inning, but Lander responded with a four-run seventh inning to put the game away. Kaylee Youmans, Kara VonAchen, and Price each drove in runs during the frame, while Bumgarner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another.

Price led the Bearcats at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Anderson and Allen each added two hits. Santos reached base four times with two hits and two walks, recording one RBI.

In the circle, freshman Anna Phifer (3-1) earned another win on the season, allowing just two hits over five scoreless innings. Freshman Cora Robinson closed the game with two innings of relief to close out the win for the Bearcats.

With the sweep, Lander remains unbeaten in Peach Belt Conference play through two weekends.

The Bearcats will return to action next week for a non-conference road doubleheader at Emmanuel (Ga.), with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. in Franklin Springs, Ga.
