North Georgia Outpaces Lander on Homecoming Afternoon

GREENWOOD - Despite a packed crowd and spirited atmosphere for Homecoming at Finis Horne Arena, Lander was unable to overcome a hot-shooting North Georgia squad, falling 79–57 on Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference play.

With the loss, the Bearcats dropped to 7-13 on the season and 5-8 in conference play, while the visiting Nighthawks improved to 15-9 overall and 10-4 in the PBC.

North Georgia jumped out to an early advantage, taking a 20-11 lead after the first quarter and extending the margin to 34-18 at halftime. The Nighthawks opened the game shooting 66.7% in the first quarter and finished the day at 52.2% from 3-point range.

Lander struggled offensively through the first three quarters, shooting just 11.8% in the second and going scoreless from the free-throw line and beyond the arc in the third. The Bearcats trailed by as many as 30 points before mounting a late push in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Lauren Crosland led the Bearcats with 16 points, while Trinity Thomas added 12 points off the bench. Quadaija Langley finished with 11 points, knocking down three 3-pointers. Lauryn Hunt pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to anchor Lander on the glass.

Lander won the battle on the offensive glass, 16-9, and outscored North Georgia 24-16 in bench points, but the Nighthawks held a 43-39 edge on the boards overall.

The Bearcats shot 64.3% in the fourth quarter to close the game, but the Nighthawks perimeter shooting proved too much to overcome, as the Nighthawks finished 12-for-23 from beyond the arc.

Lander will look to bounce back Wednesday, Feb. 11, when the Bearcats travel to Augusta for a 5:30 p.m. PBC matchup in Augusta, Ga. The Jaguars (15-7, 10-5 PBC) currently sit fourth in the conference standings.
