GREENWOOD - The Lander field hockey team struggled to find a consistent offensive rhythm Tuesday evening as the Bearcats fell to Converse, 1-0, in South Atlantic Conference action at Frank Hill Stadium.

The Bearcats (8-6, 6-4 SAC) struggled to generate scoring opportunities against the Valkyries (6-7, 6-4 SAC) outside of a strong second quarter.

After a scoreless first half, Converse broke through midway through the third quarter. The Valkyries earned a penalty corner that led to an initial shot saved by Lander goalkeeper Maddie White. Converse recycled the opportunity into another corner, with Autumn Kern setting up Ashley Shoffner for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

The Valkyries nearly took the lead a couple of minutes earlier when Vania Toranzo sent a shot toward the cage, but freshman Bo Rouweler came up with a defensive save to keep the game scoreless. It was Rouweler's second defensive save of the season.

Lander's best offensive opportunities came in the second quarter, when the Bearcats outshot Converse 6-0 and forced five saves from Valkyries goalkeeper Camille Hordies.

The Bearcats nearly broke through midway through the period when sophomore Lily Ardito forced a save from Hordies before senior Leira Van Tilburg sent the rebound off the post. Lander continued to apply pressure in the closing minutes of the half, with freshman Hayley Bernhardt recording back-to-back shots on goal before Floor Mulder forced another save following a penalty corner.

However, the Bearcats struggled to maintain that offensive pressure after halftime, managing just three shots over the final 30 minutes. Outside of their six-shot second quarter, Lander generated only four shots across the other three periods combined.

Bernhardt led the Bearcats with three shots, all on goal, while Mulder added two shots on target. Hordies finished with six saves to preserve the shutout for Converse.

Maddie White and Avery Tworkoski split time in goal for Lander, combining for two saves.

Lander will conclude its regular-season home slate Saturday morning when the Bearcats welcome Barton to Frank Hill Stadium for an 11 a.m. matchup.
