Bearcats’ Defensive Effort Not Enough in 56-49 Road Loss at Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Lander women's basketball brought defensive pressure Wednesday night, but a difficult shooting performance proved costly in a 56-49 setback to Georgia College (7-11, 3-7 PBC) in a midweek road game.

The Bearcats (6-10, 4-6 PBC) never led but stayed competitive throughout by forcing Georgia College into 23 turnovers and recording 15 steals. Lander capitalized with timely stops and hustle plays, keeping the margin within reach despite the Bobcats controlling the tempo for most of the night.

Despite their defensive tenacity, Lander struggled to find a rhythm offensively, shooting just 30 percent from the field (18-of-60) and 20 percent from beyond the arc. The Bearcats also left opportunities at the free-throw line, converting 9-of-17 attempts.

Quadaija Langley paced all scorers with 15 points, hitting 5-of-16 shots and knocking down a pair of 3-pointers. Alindria Dudley added an all-around performance with 11 points, six rebounds, five assists, and a game-high seven steals. Kayla Tilus chipped in 10 points and a block, while Trinity Thomas contributed nine points and four steals.

Lander's effort on the offensive glass generated 13 second-chance points, and the Bearcats matched Georgia College with 20 points in the paint. However, Georgia College's size and efficiency on the boards made the difference, as the Bobcats outrebounded Lander 46-33 and shot 40 percent from the floor.

Georgia College built its largest lead at 11 points midway through the third quarter and maintained control down the stretch by converting 14 free throws. Lander continued to pressure defensively in the fourth quarter and limited the Bobcats to just one fast-break point, but the Bearcats were unable to produce enough offense to erase the deficit.

Lander will look to regroup as it returns home to host No. 23 Columbus State. Weather conditions may impact the weekend schedule, but as of now, the Bearcats are slated to face the Cougars on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 1:30 p.m. inside Finis Horne Arena.
