GREENWOOD - The Lander women's basketball team battled early and competed on the glass, but No. 23 Columbus State used depth and defensive pressure to pull away for a 70-56 victory Friday night at Finis Horne Arena.
The Bearcats (6-12, 4-7 PBC) struck first and briefly held a 3-2 lead in the opening minutes, but Columbus State (15-3, 9-2 PBC) quickly seized control and led for more than 38 minutes of game time. Despite the loss, Lander showed resilience, forcing 24 turnovers and grabbing 17 offensive rebounds to create second-chance opportunities.
Lander was led by Quadaija Langley, who finished with a game-high 18 points, connecting on three 3-pointers and going 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Lauren Crosland added 16 points and five rebounds, while Kayla Tilus chipped in nine points, seven rebounds and three steals to anchor the Bearcats' effort on both ends.
The Bearcats stayed within striking distance through hustle plays and rebounding, finishing just three boards shy of Columbus State (44-47). However, shooting proved to be the difference. Lander shot 28.4 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from beyond the arc, while Columbus State capitalized on balanced scoring and a 36-2 advantage in bench points.
Columbus State gradually extended its lead in the second half, pushing the margin to as many as 19 points late in the fourth quarter. Lander continued to fight, attacking the glass and the rim, but could not overcome the shooting disparity.
Lander will look to regroup as conference play continues. The Bearcats head to the road Wednesday, Jan. 28, for a matchup at Clayton State in Morrow, Ga., with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m.
