Balkman Named PBC Track Athlete of the Week

GREENWOOD – Lander track and field sophomore Michael Balkman was named the Peach Belt Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week on Monday, the league announced. It marks Balkman's second career weekly honor and the first indoor track and field weekly award in program history.

Balkman placed second in the 400 meters at the Tryon Winter Classic over the weekend with a time of 49.26. He also finished fifth in the 200 meters, posting a time of 21.81 that set a new school record and currently stands as the top mark in the PBC this season.

His 200-meter time ranks as the third-fastest in conference history.

The Bearcats return to action later this week as the indoor season continues at the Liberty Open, hosted by Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. The originally scheduled two-day meet has been reduced to a single day on Friday, Jan. 23, due to potential hazardous weather on Saturday.
