Tymia Willis and Michael Balkman Named PBC Track Athletes of the Week

MARTINEZ, Ga. — Sophomore Tymia Willis and freshman Michael Balkman have been named the Peach Belt Conference Female and Male Track Athletes of the Week, respectively.

This marks the first time a Lander track and field athlete has earned a PBC track weekly award and the second time this season that a Bearcat has received conference honors, with Riley Wolters previously earning Field Athlete of the Week recognition. It is also the first time in program history that Lander has had multiple honorees in the same week.

Willis set a personal record and program-best time of 58.20 seconds in the 400 meters at the Montreat College Open, finishing first in a field of 11 athletes. Her time ranks as the second-fastest in the PBC this season. She also ran the opening leg of the 4x400-meter relay, which placed second with a time of 4:18.12, the fifth-best mark in the conference.

Balkman won the men's 400 meters, breaking the program record with a time of 48.02 seconds, the fastest in the conference this season and just 0.4 seconds off an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying mark. The victory marked his first individual win of the outdoor season and his career. He also anchored the men's 4x400-meter relay team, which set a program record with a second-place time of 3:27.61.
